Levasseur Watch — August 20 to September 3, 2026
This research on Levasseur, LeVasseur, Le Vasseur, Vasseur and Vassaur reveals some truly interesting new developments for family history and genealogy. I have excluded the simple mentions of the surname in the news when they did not add anything to these subjects.
📚 New publication on the Levasseur family of Matane. The Society of History and Genealogy of La Matanie announced the launch of volume 4 of Lynn Thibault, dedicated to the Gauthier, Levasseur, Lefrançois, Paquet, and Lebreux families of the Matane region. The book consists of 425 pages and contains stories as well as photographs of ancestors who participated in the development of Matane, Saint-Luc-de-Matane, Saint-René-de-Matane, Sainte-Félicité, Saint-Adelme, and Saint-Ulric. For the Association, it would be particularly interesting to identify the pages dedicated to the Levasseur family and to verify whether they contain photographs or unpublished information.

🕯️ Roger R. Levasseur — a genealogical lead in Maine. Roger R. Levasseur, born on April 22, 1939, in Topsham, Maine, died on August 25, 2026, in Harpswell, at the age of 87. A former American Marine, he worked in construction before becoming a lobster fisherman. His obituary mentions his wife Roseline Riendeau Levasseur, his children Roger and Gina, as well as several Levasseur brothers. For the Association on the Levasseur of Maine project, this family from Topsham/Brunswick/Harpswell could constitute an interesting lead to connect with the already documented lineages.

🕯️ Gisèle Levasseur — Saint-Léonard-d’Aston → Montreal. A new notice reports the death of Gisèle Levasseur on August 28, 2026, at the age of 98. She was born on January 28, 1928, in Saint-Léonard-d’Aston and resided in Montreal. The notice currently published unfortunately contains very little family information, but the places and dates may allow for searching her genealogy in the Association’s genealogical database.
🕯️ Martin Levasseur — branch of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Another particularly rich genealogically significant notice concerns Martin Levasseur (1957–2026), who died in Matane on August 14. He resided in Saint-Moïse and was originally from La Rédemption. He was the son of Raymond Levasseur and Jeanne-D’Arc Lévesque. The notice lists his two daughters and, above all, a very important Levasseur family: Herman, Odette, Rodrigue, Rémi, Raymonde, Bernadette, Gisèle, Ubald, Jacquelin, Madeleine, Nathalie, and Hélène. The memorial will take place in Mont-Joli on September 6. This notice is particularly pertinent given the current research by the Association on Mont-Joli and the Levasseur families of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
Death notice – Martin Levasseur
🕯️ Simone Couture, born Levasseur — Winnipeg. An announcement published on September 1, 2026, announces the death of Simone Couture (born Levasseur), born on August 24, 1949. It provides several family details: her children Alain and Ginette and her brothers and sisters Cécile, Roger, Henriette, Roland, Gilbert, and Jean Levasseur, as well as Pauline and Edmée, who died before her. This could allow for documenting a Levasseur branch established in Manitoba.
To remember for the Association
The discovery that seems most promising to me this week is the new book by Lynn Thibault on the families of Matane. It comes at a time when the Association is actually working on Louis-Joseph Levasseur and the Levasseur House in Matane. The recent article by the Société d’histoire reminds us that Louis-Joseph Levasseur (1850–1928) and Aglaé Paradis had 14 children, eight of whom reached adulthood and left an important legacy; he was also mayor of Matane three times.
