This week’s search covering Levasseur, LeVasseur, Le Vasseur, Vasseur, and Vassaur revealed relatively few new genealogy-specific developments, but several noteworthy items emerged for family history research and for the ongoing monitoring activities of the Association.

📚 An Interesting Historical Lead in Matane

The Société d’histoire et de généalogie de La Matanie has recently republished a well-documented historical article on Louis-Joseph Levasseur (1850–1928).

Born in Rimouski, Louis-Joseph became a merchant in Matane in 1872. He married Aglaé Paradis, and together they raised 14 children. He served as Mayor of Matane on three occasions (1889–1891, 1896–1897, and 1907–1910) and played an important role in bringing the railway to the region.

One particularly valuable aspect of the article concerns the Levasseur General Store, located opposite the Matane River bridge, and the impressive residence he built in 1906. Part of the family’s original furniture has been preserved: the Historical Society acquired the collection for $30,000, and it is now housed at the Pavillon de la Cité museum.

This story deserves further investigation. Photographs of the general store, the 1906 residence, descendants, preserved furnishings, and business records could provide excellent material for a future Levasseur historical feature.

📰 Félix Levasseur in Quebec Agricultural News

In its August 19, 2026 edition, La Terre de chez nous mentions Félix Levasseur of Rivière-la-Paix, a barley producer. Although the article is brief, it highlights his pride in the quality of his crop and represents another contemporary appearance of the Levasseur surname in the Quebec press.

🇺🇸 Vassaur Family in Arkansas

A recently published obituary from Arkansas provides another genealogical clue for the Vassaur branch. Dr. Bobby Lee Gravett Sr., who passed away on August 1, 2026, at the age of 93, is survived by descendants including Stephanie Vassaur (George), of Rogers, Arkansas, and William Vassaur.

Although this is not a major historical discovery, these contemporary references help document the modern generations of the Arkansas Vassaur family.

🕯️ Levasseur Obituary in New Brunswick

A new obituary was also published on August 12 for Constance “Anne” Levasseur (née Britt), who passed away on August 6, 2026, in Saint John, New Brunswick, at the age of 85. She was the widow of Ron Levasseur and is survived by her daughter Suzanne and two grandchildren.

🔬 Levasseur Featured in a Scientific Publication

Another noteworthy occurrence involves Steve D. Levasseur, co-author of a scientific paper published online on August 5, 2026. The study examines gaps in hydroxychloroquine retinopathy screening among patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It is based on a Canadian population study and received support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

🇺🇸 Long-Standing Family Business Closes After Nearly 50 Years

A Pennsylvania news story reports that Pappou’s Pizza Pub in Morton closed permanently on August 9, 2026, after nearly five decades in business. Lisa Levasseur, whose family owns the establishment, reflected that many customers had become extended family over the years.

🔎 Highlights of the Week

The most significant discovery this week is the Louis-Joseph Levasseur dossier from Matane. It directly enriches the history of the Levasseur families of the Lower St. Lawrence region and opens several promising avenues for future research.

For the period August 13–20, I found no major new discoveries concerning Laurent Levasseur, Pierre Levasseur, Jean Levasseur, Kaskaskia, or the French origins of the Levasseur families. Rather than filling the report with incidental references to the surname, I have focused only on developments that offer genuine historical, genealogical, or contemporary interest.

Next week’s watch will continue to monitor Quebec, the Lower St. Lawrence, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Arkansas, and Louisiana, along with historical and genealogical societies, as these remain the regions most likely to produce meaningful new information about the Levasseur families.
